La Grande Arche
La Grande Arche de la Défense is located in the western part
of Paris. Construction started in 1985 and
ended on July 1989. La Grande Arche is a modern monumental arch that marks the end of
the Voie de Triumphe, a large
road that connects the east and west of the city. This was one of the
projects commissioned by the French President, François Mintteranded in the
1980s to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. The main
purpose was to vitalize the business district. Johan Otto Von Spreckelsen, Paul
Andreu, and Erik Reitzel were the architects that took part into building La Grade Arche. This modern arch is
about 360.89 feet length and 360.89 feet width. La Grande
Arche has 35 floors and is also a skyscraper building. The Arch is twice as big as the Arc de Triumphal which was not originally
part of the plans.
